Arrowsmith Program

If a child can’t learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn.

BTC is one of the very few schools in Australia to adopt the Arrowsmith Program – and the only Australian Boarding School which runs it. This unique and proven approach is about learning in a different way, and addresses academic skill deficits in children who have difficulty learning intervenes and strengthens the weak cognitive capacities that affect learning and has proved immeasurably successful.

How It Works

The Arrowsmith Program is founded on neuroscience research and more than 30 years of experience showing that it is possible for students to strengthen the weak cognitive capacities that affect learning. It has proven effective for students who have difficulty with reading, writing and mathematics, comprehension, logical reasoning, problem solving, visual and auditory memory, non-verbal learning, attention, processing speed and dyslexia.

The Arrowsmith Program is suitable for students across a broad spectrum of mild to severe learning problems and has been successful with both primary and secondary students, and even adults.

Students usually take part in a three to four year program, before returning to their regular grade level at school without the need for special education assistance.

The program has grown rapidly in popularity, as both parents and teachers see amazing results in students with previously debilitating learning difficulties.

Why It Works

In the past, assistance for students with learning disabilities has come in the form of programs which simply compensate for the difficulties they encounter in the classroom. In contrast, the goal of the Arrowsmith Program is to identify and strengthen each individual students’ area of dysfunction. It deals with the root causes of the learning disability rather than managing its symptoms.

Joining the Program

To take part in the Arrowsmith Program, each child must be assessed and accepted by the College. These students then spend most of their time working within a specifically designed and run Arrowsmith classroom. A proportion of their time is also spent within their year level classroom at the school.

We believe that the Arrowsmith Program is ideally suited to our school mission to help all learners achieve their potential and we are doing this through an Arrowsmith Cognitive Classroom on site.
