Our approach

The atmosphere in every classroom at BTC is positive, supportive and challenges each student to achieve their best. Our aim is to foster an enthusiasm for learning so that students become independent learners who are confident, creative problem solvers and decision-makers.

Our students learn by participating, leading and collaborating with others. They are actively involved in creating the thinking and learning environment both inside and outside the classroom and to facilitate this, the College’s academic programme offers a wide range of liberal arts and contemporary subjects

To further students’ capacity for interaction and ‘life learning’ we enrich the academic program by encouraging an approach of ‘Taking Part’ – a range of activities that includes camps (including the excellent Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme), field activities, excursions, enterprise education, debating, public speaking, musical and dramatic performances and others.

Arrowsmith – learning in a different way

We understand that students learn in different ways and that some encounter difficulties with learning through mainstream teaching. We are the only boarding school in Australia that runs the Arrowsmith Program: founded on neuroscience research and more than 30 years of experience, this excellent Program shows that it is possible for students to strengthen the weak cognitive capacities that affect learning.

The Arrowsmith Program at BTC has proven tremendously effective for students who have difficulty with reading, writing and mathematics, comprehension, logical reasoning, problem solving, visual and auditory memory, non-verbal learning, attention, processing speed and dyslexia.

Pathways for success

Research has shown that young people who leave school at the completion of compulsory education (previously Year 10) are over-represented in regional Australia when compared with their urban peers. BTC therefore also offers a curriculum that includes a broad base of vocational preparation.
