Blackthorn Scholars Program

The Blackthorn Scholars Program commenced in 2025 following a generous donation to the College Foundation providing opportunities for students displaying excellence in education to further explore, evolve and expand their talents. This scholarship program specifically provides support for students displaying academic potential and possibility, after BTC, of further preparation for the working world. 

Eligibility:

Pathway 1: New enrolments to the College 

  • Students looking to enrol at the College for Year 7, 10 and 11 entry points. 
  • Students must complete the Edutest standardised online testing and achieve a stanine 7 or above in at least 3 of the 5 testing areas inclusive of at least one numeracy area (Verbal Reasoning, Numerical Reasoning, Reading Comprehension, Mathematics, Written Expression).

Pathway 2: Existing students

  • Current BTC students moving into Yr 7 and 11. 
  • Students must complete the Edutest standardised online testing and achieve a stanine 7 or above in at least 3 of the 5 testing areas inclusive of at least one numeracy area (Verbal Reasoning, Numerical Reasoning, Reading Comprehension, Mathematics, Written Expression).
  • Students must be maintaining an overall grade of 85% or above across Mathematics, English, Science, HASS in their current school year. 

Students must also meet the following requirements for eligibility:

  1. Be an Australian citizen.
  2. Reside in an area recognised as a regional, rural or remote location.

Scholarships available include:

Boarding Students

  • Up to 70% Boarding and Tuition applied directly by BTC to the student’s College account

Day students 

  • Up to 70% Tuition applied directly by BTC to the student’s College account

Conditions

The continuation of a Scholarship will be contingent upon a student adhering to the following requirements:

  • Continued academic performance maintaining an overall grade of 85% or above across Mathematics, English, Science, HASS.
  • Continued participation and involvement in the extra-curricular life of the College to the Principal's satisfaction.
  • Upholding the Go it Blue values when representing themselves across the school and wider community. 
  • Dress, bearing, manners and behaviour continuing to be of a high standard, and to the satisfaction of the Principal.
  • Fees and other monies owed to the College or its agencies being paid promptly.

Other Conditions of Note:

  • Scholarships are not transferable to another school or student.
  • Scholarships do not include any incidental expenses such as uniforms, textbooks, stationery, transport costs etc.
  • Items of personal expenditure (for example, toiletries, casual clothes etc.) are not included in the Scholarship.
  • All Scholarship recipients not currently enrolled at the College will be required to undertake the College’s enrolment process, including the completion of enrolment forms, payment of monies and submission of appropriate documentation.
  • As per the Blackheath & Thornburgh College Scholarship Policy, no 'Sibling Discount' will apply to the applicant if granted a Scholarship.
  • The Scholarship holder will be subject to all the rules and regulations of the College in the same way as are all other students. This extends to the College's behaviour management policy and to the College's right to dismiss the student if, in the College's opinions, such action becomes necessary.

The College may terminate any Scholarship at any time, where in its opinion, the terms of the award are not being met.

Blackheath & Thornburgh College reserves the right not to award a Scholarship if, in its opinion, no applicant is worthy of the award in a particular year. 

Located in Charters Towers, North Queensland, we offer co-educational learning from Kindy to Year 12 with Boarding facilities.
